Parents are always looking for short, sweet, quality bedtime stories. This one fits the bill. For ages 3 to 7, the story follows the wanderings of a child's mind as he drifts into dreamland. He wonders if all the sounds he hears--the purring of his kitten, the sounds of nature outside his window__continue when he is asleep. The black-and-white watercolors by Ray are fabulous, evoking the lonesome feel of shadowy night. With only a few sentences on each page, this is a bedtime story young readers can enjoy alone or read aloud. It surely will have children wondering about the sounds they hear as they fall asleep. From the author of the popular book Can I Have a Stegosaurus, Mom? Can I? Please!?, this book will make a great addition to every library's children's collection. The title is also available in Spanish, Los Sonidos de la Noche.

Night Sounds is the perfect bedtime book -- gentle, peaceful, and oh-so-sleep-inducing. Lois Grambling and Randall Ray have created a book that evokes an atmosphere of calm and serenity; even the text is set in clouds surrounded by the night sky. Night Sounds gives a new twist to the age-old question: If a tree falls in a forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? Children who fall in love with this book will find themselves falling asleep to that question again and again, because this is a book that begs to be read every night.

Night Sounds is a 40-page children's book. I received a copy in English and one in Spanish. This was exciting to me because my girls are learning Spanish this year, and it will be great to have a Spanish version for them to read. The story is about the sounds one hears while in bed at night. The book makes a nice bedtime story because it is very soothing and matter-of-fact about all the different sounds you might hear while lying in your bed waiting for sleep. A fun aspect of the book is that it is all in black and white and shades of gray, just like at night when your light is off and all is in shadows.

I recommend this book and also recommend the practice of reading bedtime stories to your children. The time for doing this is way too short. Night Sounds is a great book to use during this lovely evening ritual.
